Consequences of Mediterranean warming events in seagrass (Posidonia oceanica) flowering records



Abstract
Posidonia oceanica, a seagrass endemic to the Mediterranean forms extended and extremely persistent meadows. It is a clonal plant with an apparently irregular pattern of flowering events. An extensive bibliographic review allowed the reconstruction of past flowering events of this species around the Mediterranean, with a high degree of confidence for the last 30 years. The data series on annual flowering prevalence (FP, flowering records per total records) and flowering intensity (FI, fraction of flowering
shoots) produced have been compared with four series on Sea Surface annual Temperature maxima (SSTmax) obtained for the NW Mediterranean (averaged from the local data series of l’Estartit and Villefranche: 1957–2005) and for the Eastern, Western basin and the whole Mediterranean sea (extracted from NCEP Reynolds interpolated SST maps: 1982–2005). Significant warming trends are detected in the Mediterranean SSTmax series, at a rate of (mean1 SE) 0.04 0.01 1C yr 1(R25 0.24, Po0.01, N5 24 years), in the Eastern basin series (0.06 0.01 1C yr  1, R25 0.43, Po0.001, N5 24 years) and in the long SSTmax series of the NW Mediterranean (0.02 0.01 C yr  1, R25 0.12, Po0.02, N5 49 years). The magnitudes of the SSTmax anomalies around the absolute warming trend do not increase with time in any SSTmax series. Peaks of FP and FI in the Mediterranean seem to occur each 9–11 years, and coincide with peaks of annual SSTmax . Annual FP and FI increase with the residuals of annual SSTmax warming trend in all Mediterranean basins (FPMED: R25 0.27, Po0.01, N 5 23; FPNW: R25 0.34, Po0.01, N5 31; FPE: R25 0.20; Po0.10,N 523). An outstanding event of P. oceanica flowering across the Mediterranean has been registered in Autumn 2003; 1 month after the highest annual SSTmax recorded in the series. The hypothesis of flowering induction by thermal stress as the possible cause of this relationship is discussed, as well as the potential use of P. oceanica flowering record as early indicator of biological change induced by global sea warming in Mediterranean marine ecosystems

An analysis of habitat distribution and associations in theOdonata of theBalearic Islands, Spain

 Spatial structure of the odon. community is analysed. The different abundance of the spp. and their most characteristic habitats in the islands are indicated. Not so naïve: Ibiza wall lizards acquired the ability to recognize alien snakes in a few years

Alien predators may impose a great threat to naïve preys. Podarcis pityusensis lizards live in Ibiza, a snake-free island until 2003. We studied lizards’ discrimination of scents of two invader snakes: one that predates on lizards, Hemorrhois hippocrepis, and another that does not, Rhinechis scalaris. We compared two populations of P. pityusensis: one from the main island of Ibiza, which coexists with both snakes, and another from the close snake-free islet of Sal Rossa. Lizards from Ibiza recognized the scent of H. hippocrepis and responded with clear antipredator behaviours. However, they reacted to the scent of R. scalaris similarly than to the odorless and the pungent controls. Lizards from Sal Rossa did not recognize any snake species. Thus, lizards can rapidly acquire the ability to react to a totally novel type of predator. Sobre las ginetas de la isla de Ibiza (Genetta genetta isabelae n.ssp.)

Las Ginetas de Ibiza habían sido consideradas hasta ahora como G. g. balearica. El estudio de 50 cráneos y 38 pieles (Cuadro 1) permite, sin embargo, caracterizarlas como una nueva subespecie, Genetta genetta isabelae n. ssp., debido fundamentalmente a su pequeño tamaño. Se consideran caracteres con valor diagnóstico LCB (longitud cóndilo-basal) ≤85 mm. LM (longitud de la mandíbula) ≤60 mm. LPm⁴ (longitud de la carnicera superior) ≤8mm. M² (segundo molar superior) muy reducido. Las manchas del pelaje son negras o marrones oscuras con abundantes pelos de color rojizo leonado. El dimorfismo sexual es poco marcado (Fig. 3). Las medidas de G. g. isabelae (Cuadros 2 y 3) difieren significativamente de las restantes poblaciones del oeste de Europa y norte de África. Estas muestran por su parte una variación clinal de tamaño, desde Francia, donde son más pequeñas, al norte de África donde son más mayores, a través de la Península Ibérica y Mallorca (Cuadros 4 y 5; Fig. 4, 5, 6 y 7).
